Not all resume services are created equal–it’s likely that hastily patched-together resume from a resume mill charging $100-$200 won’t be of job-winning quality. Given how important this document is, you want to be sure that you’re investing in a quality resume writing service.

We’re not going to tell you not to use our competitors (although of course, we want you to choose our service!). But we do want to help you make an informed decision. Here’s when a resume service won’t be worth it:
1. You’re not prepared to collaborate with your writer, provide the data they need, and listen to their suggestions

Resume writers put in a lot of work to craft a great resume, but they need your input for it to be a great resume for you. You know your career story better than anyone, and supplying all the information the resume writer asks for will ensure the resume they create will accurately share that story.
2. You need career advice more than a resume
Resume writers can help you if you’re at the stage in your job search where you need a resume, but they can’t do the rest of the job search for you. In order to craft a quality resume, a resume writer needs to know what sort of jobs you’re applying to.
Likewise, if you’re already landing interviews, revising your resume won’t get you any closer to the job of your dreams. That means the resume you’ve written on your own has what it takes; it’s more a matter of interview strategy at that point. There are resources for the earlier and later stages of the job search, though–they’re just not within the scope of resume writing! 3. You don’t have a clear job target or want a “general resume”
There is no such thing as a successful “general resume.” One of the primary purposes of a resume is to demonstrate you have the skills from the job description, so having a job description to refer to is necessary for writing a quality resume.
Even two jobs within the same field may call for different skills, and companies may value some traits more than others. So it’s always crucial to read the job description so you know what you’re applying for (and so your potential company knows you have the specific skills they want in a candidate).
If you have a general idea of the sort of jobs you’re looking for, though, you can use something called the bucket method to craft resumes for the different fields you have in mind. Even so, you still have to tailor your resume to the job description!
4. You expect the resume to do all the work and don’t have a plan for networking and nailing your interview
Having a quality resume will only get you part of the way toward job hunting success. You still need to be willing to put the work in with networking and interviewing. We know these aren’t most people’s favorite part of the job search, but they’re still important.
